Counselors from drug treatment centers and resource people posing together on the last day of a training program in Jammu.

JAMMU, March 13: A 5-day training program leading to a certificate in “Rehab Counseling and Relapse Prevention” for counselors in rehab centers ended today.
The program was organized by the State-Level Coordinating Agency JKSPYM of the Ministry of Social Justice and Union Empowerment under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defense (NISD).
The program was inaugurated on March 9 by Dr. Salim-ur-Rehman, Director of Health Services of Jammu, together with Dr. Narinder Datyal Medical Superintendent Gandhi Nagar, Dr. Arun Sharma, Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital Maternity Nagar (Jammu).
Resource persons for the training program were Dr Manu Arora (HoD Psychiatric Department, GMC Jammu), Dr Shabnam Rivees (Associate Professor Clinical Psychology, Department of Psychiatric), Dr Arti Bakshi (HoD Department of Psychology, Jammu University) , Dr. Abhishek Chauhan (Neuro-Psychiatrist, GMC), Dr. Mohd Muzafer Khan (Consultant Clinical Psychologist) and Dr. Vinay Kumar (Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Central University of Jammu).
Approximately 25 counselors participated in the program. The first day of training began with the session ‘Introduction to Psychoactive Substances’ by resource person Dr Shabnam Rivees, followed by sessions on ‘The Science of Addiction’ and ‘Principles of Addiction Treatment’ taken by the Dr Manu Arora, and a session on “The helping relationship” led by Dr Arti Bakshi.
On the second day, Dr. Bakshi facilitated sessions on “Basic Counseling Skills”, “Stages and Strategies for Change”, “Group Counseling Skills” and “Psychological Education Groups for Clients and Families” , while the third day started with the sessions “Specific Mental Disorders and Common Problems”, “Pharmacotherapy in Addiction”, “Screening and Assessment” and “Addiction Severity Index” by Dr. Mohd Muzafer Khan.
On the fourth day, sessions were conducted on “ASI administration and coding”, “MATRS treatment planning”, “CBT basic concepts and relapse prevention”, and “Methods of using CBT Strategies” by Dr. Mohd Muzafer Khan and on the closing day sessions on “Social Stigma” and “Substance Abuse Consequences” were taken by Dr. Vinay Kumar. Certificates were also distributed to participants on the last day of the program.
