IBEW Local 158 Holds Open House for Apprenticeship Program in Green Bay | WFRV Local 5

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (WFRV) – It’s National Apprenticeship Week and IBEW Local 158 is looking for new candidates for its growing program. “We’re electricians by trade and we do everything from residential and commercial jobs to industrial jobs,” said Jesse Jacques, deputy business manager for Local 158.

On Tuesday, IBEW Local 158 hosted an open house at its Green Bay training center for aspiring artisans and women looking to get started in the industry. In partnership with NWTC, part of the training is done internally. “Evening school training takes place here. There are around 200 hours of evening classes taking place here. There are also 720 hours of day school training that are paid for the Apprentice, ”explains Jacques.

Currently 8% of union members are women and minorities and there is a new push to increase this percentage with the EmpowerHER campaign. “The particularity of this EmowHER group is that it encompasses all the building trades. It’s not just the electricians, it’s the plumbers, pipe layers, painters and heat insulators, that’s the gamble, ”said Marsha Nebel, Apprenticeship Outreach.

Nebel has been in the industry for over 40 years and says that one of the reasons she got into the business was because she had parents in the business. “My dad and my grandfather were both electricians, and I think I had a lock in my hand when I was 5,” Nebel said. Emilia Selly, 25, is currently a candidate for the IBEW Apprenticeship Program at Local 158. She tells Eric Richards of Local 5 that she is interested in the field because it is interesting. “My brother was also in the one-year program at the NWTC and I decided to do that too,” Selly said.

Construction projects continue throughout the state of Wisconsin. That being said, there is a great demand for electricians.
