Leeds United return dates, training plan and Burnley fight after efforts to save Aston Villa game

Leeds United’s postponements of consecutive games have not dampened hopes that 2022 will start at the first opportunity on the pitch for Whites.

As 2021 ends in a 4-1 loss to Arsenal, Burnley’s planned trip to Elland Road will hopefully prove to be the starting point of the footballing year for Leeds.

After an injury crisis unprecedented in Marcelo Bielsa’s time earlier this month, a Covid outbreak has claimed enough players to satisfy the Premier League that they cannot field a competitive roster.

With Liverpool’s postponement confirmed, there was little hope for the Aston Villa clash planned for Elland Road two days later.

However, with a week now to prepare and periods of isolation over, Burnley’s visit to West Yorkshire looks upbeat.

In the three days between the postponement announcements, there have been no new cases of Covid among gamers, but three new positive tests among backstage staff, it’s understood.

It is understood that Thorp Arch reopened this afternoon for players who are fit to train, which at least puts the groundwork in place for the team to start preparing properly for the Clarets.

Existing players with Covid will complete their isolation periods in good time ahead of Burnley’s game, further emboldening hopes that Leeds will meet the demands of the day’s squad.

There had even been efforts to move the game forward with Villa, with a special dispensation for some players to train safely in Thorp Arch over the past few days, but it turned out to be too big an order to get. enough of the list fit and ready.
