Man Utd star Diogo Dalot ‘slept on a training ground’ to change careers
Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot didn’t compromise as he looked to put his injury issues behind him and send a message to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer while on loan at AC Milan
Diogo Dalot has gone to great lengths to resuscitate his career after falling down the pecking order at Manchester United, including sleeping at the AC Milan training ground.
The Portuguese full-back spent last season on loan with the Italian giants having made just seven starts under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in an injured 2019/20 campaign.
Dalot, 22, has targeted consistent minutes with Milan in an effort to set some pace and prove to the Old Trafford hierarchy that he can put his many fitness setbacks behind him.
His hard work paid off as he made 33 appearances in all competitions for Stefano Pioli’s side and was still in the day’s squad without any injury issues.
Goal laid bare the hard work Dalot did to ensure he was always available for selection, claiming the player often slept at the club’s training ground in Milanello to help him recover between matches and training.
The report added that he would snub the possibility of taking a trip away from Milan on days off to reduce his chances of catching coronavirus, as he was in regular contact with Ole Gunanr Solskjaer throughout his season at the ‘outside.
Additionally, Dalot signed up for additional training sessions and worked closely with a nutritionist, helping him play over 2,000 minutes of football for the Rossoneri.
How did Dalot behave on loan?
Although he didn’t start every game under Pioli, Dalot featured regularly as either left-back or right-back, helping Milan to finish second in Serie A against local rivals Inter.
The former Porto academy starlet scored two goals and three assists, with Pioli saying he would become a “complete player”.
Dalot’s form was enough to turn the head of Portugal manager Fernando Santos, who selected him to his squad for Euro 2020 after Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo caught Covid-19.

Milan wanted to extend their stay for another season, but they couldn’t agree on the structure of a deal with United, who were only interested in another loan if there was an obligation to purchase in summer 2022.
Solskjaer can be happy the deal never came to fruition as he failed to sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid and Dalot now serves as Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s main replacement.
Indeed, the United boss said earlier this month that Dalot “had learned a lot” from his time at Milan and had enough confidence in the Portuguese to send Brandon Williams on loan to Norwich City.
How has Dalot performed this season?
Dalot’s only start to the season came in the 1-0 loss to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup last week.
But he also played an important role when he was called up by Solskjaer, coming off the bench twice in the first half when the Red Devils needed him.
The first of those occasions came when Wan-Bissaka was sent off against Young Boys in the Champions League and the second when Luke Shaw was injured against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Dalot’s ability to play in either of the full-back roles continues to be one of his main strengths, and his versatility and hard work means he can look forward to more minutes. during the season.
