A group of Nigerian engineers in Scotland say that everything is now ready to inaugurate an online training center for local content capacity development for people working in the profession in Nigeria.
A statement in Abuja from Dr Oluseun Adediran, President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Glasgow Branch, said the position was announced during the engineers’ pre-convention briefing.
According to him, the first tagged engineering convention: NSE-ENGCON Glasgow 2022, is to be held in Paisley Glasgow from July 28-30.
Adediran said the program would be the first of its kind by an international branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and is expected to feature keynote speeches centered on the theme.
He said the event would be organized in conjunction with Social Innovation, Leadership and Management (SILM), School of Business and Creative Industries at the University of the West of Scotland.
Adediran said the e-learning plan is part of the group’s initiatives to support the development of local content in Nigeria beyond their current roles of facilitating skills acquisition platforms for engineering personnel. .
He added that the plan aimed to equip engineers serving in technical engineering committees on energy, engineering codes and standards, among others.
The statement explains that Mr. Charles Okafor, branch secretary and chairman of the convention’s organizing committee, said the idea of hosting the convention was conceived two years ago.
Salifu added that the upcoming event will serve as the start of a series of local content development initiatives from the branch, focusing on building engineering capacity and improving technical skills in Nigeria.
He further revealed that plans have also been made to launch an online center for training undergraduate and graduate students, university professors and engineers in Nigeria with skills software relevant to design and programming.
He said the idea was to build a huge pool of globally qualified and skilled engineers who would then be linked directly to local and international industries for employment.
He said the branch had held a series of stakeholder meetings with key players in the engineering sector in Nigeria including university vice-chancellors and heads of engineering departments, key industry players and officials from the Council of Engineering Regulators in Nigeria (COREN).
Salifu said the branch and other stakeholders have recognized the need to train and retrain engineers to meet the demands of local and international requirements for competent engineering personnel.
He said the hub was to take off in a tiered format over the next five years and aimed to empower Nigerian engineers to become globally competitive alongside their counterparts in India and other countries. country.
He added that the plan to rebuild the engineering sector would allow Nigerian engineers to benefit from the large number of remote employment opportunities offered by an increase in the volumes of engineering tasks outsourced by companies around the world.
