Training Ground Guru | Skubala appointed Leeds United U21 head coach
Written by Training Ground Guru —
FORMER England futsal head coach Michael Skubala has been named Leeds United Under-21 boss.
He replaces Mark Jackson, who led the U23s before being promoted to the first team under Jesse Marsch last season (Premier League 2 has moved from an U23 to an U21 competition from next season).
Skubala was head coach and head of elite performance for England Futsal from January 2017 until it disbanded towards the end of 2020.
He was retained by the FA after that and has worked with the England U18s for 18 months. Prior to working with the FA, Skubala was Director of Football at Loughborough University for four years.
His assistant at Leeds will be Michal Pudjak, who remains in place as an U21 assistant.
Leeds director of football Victor Orta said: “The role of head coach within the Under-21 team is clearly an important role at a club which sees so many players progress to the first team. .
“We interviewed candidates from all over the world over the summer, but the work that Michael has done in the FA, alongside his ambitious plans for the band, has given him the edge and we are really delighted to welcome him to the club.”
Academy Director Adam Underwood added, “This is another clear sign of progress for our Academy. The Leeds United Academy is a key part of our DNA and we believe Michael is the best possible candidate to improve the group he will work with, while preparing them to take the leap to become first-team players.
Skubala will train for the first time on Monday next week as the side prepare for the start of their Premier League 2 Division 2 season.
